Abstract

Inappropriate land use with its capability may implication to low of land productivity and degradation The cocoa crop is one of plantation commodities in Indonesia as sources of foreign exchange. Thisstudy aims to determine land suitability classes of cocoa in Teupin Mane Sub Watershed (TMSw), using the descriptive survey methods via forming the land mapping units (LMUs). The LMUs formed wadone by overlaying the maps (slope map, soil map, and land use map). In each LMU was identifiedmorphology characteristics, and fourteen soil samples were collecting from each site of LMU foanalysis purpose of soil physical and chemical properties in laboratory. The climate data (temperature and rainfall) were taken from Climate Station (BMKG) Malikussaleh North Aceh. The results revealedthat the soil drainage is generally well, the slope was wavy to hilly, the erosion hazard is generally mild, the soil depth >100 cm, the stoniness and rock outcrops were relatively small. Soil texture rangefrom clay, silty clay to sandy clay loam. The soil pH was acidic to neutral, cation exchange capacity(CEC) and base saturation (BS) values were low to high, content of organic-C was very low to highLand suitability classes of cocoa cultivation in TMSw are suitable (at S2 and S3 classes). The limitingfactors at S2 classes are temperature, rainfall, dry months, slope, erosion hazard, texture, BS, CECWhile at S3 classes limiting factors consist are slope, erosion hazard, pH, and organic-C. The improvement efforts that need to be done is liming, composting, and provide of mounds or waterretaining pits technology. Keywords: cocoa crops, land characteristics, land mapping unit, land suitability classes, watershed
