Abstract

Dug-well is a water supplying facility which is easily contaminated from out side especially if the distance of the well from pollutant sources and the construction of the well does not meet the requirement. The bad action taken by the water users will also influence the quality of the water microbiology. Cempeudak village is the one that most of its villagers still use dug-well as their clean water source. There is an animal market located very close to the residence of the villagers in this village. Without being processed first, the waste produced by this animal market is discharged into its surrounding environment that it probably contaminates the water of the dug-wells. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of distance and construction of the dug-well and the action of the water users on the amount of coliform in the water of the dug-wells belong to the residents living in the vicinity of the animal market in Cempeudak village, Tanah Jambo Aye Subdistrict, Aceh Utara District. The samples for this survey study with cross-sectional design were selected through simple random sampling technique. The data for this study were obtained through observation, interviews and laboratory axamination. The result of this study showed that, of the samples from the 58 dug-wells examined, the water from 44 dug-wells was contaminaed by coliform bacteria that exceed 50/100ml, the standard set based on the Regulation of Indonesian Minister of Health No.416/MENKES/PER/IX/1990. The result of Chi-square test showed that there was a significant relationship between the distance of the well from the animal market (p=0,044), the construction of the wells (P=0,000) and the action of the water users (p=0,002) (<0,005). The result of the multiple logistic regression tests showed that the construction of the dug-wells was the most dominant variable which had influence on the amount of coliform in the water of the dug-wells with Exp.B= 23,560. The related agencies are suggested to perform the animal market waste management and provide extension on the health-qualified construction of the well to the villagers.
