Abstract

Political transformation process of Aceh in the post Helsinki peace agreement which has been running almost sixt years should be viewed overally. The process provides new challenge as well as expectation for Aceh people and Indonesia. For understanding the process, we need to learn overally all aspects of life such as political identity, social culture, law, and economics which have existed as a continuing historical dialectic in Aceh. The course of Aceh’s history in the beginning of 21st century is interesting to study. Phase of transformation has go on step by step marked by the failure of Henry Dunant Centre in mediating conflict, earthquake and tsunami, presence of Conflict Management Iniative, Helsinki Peace Agreement, process of decommissioning, dissolution of GAM Military wing, birth of Aceh Transition Committee, until withdrawal of non organic army/police. Establishment of the Aceh Reconstruction Body as a institution of reintegration has leaves various problems. Implementation of Law Number 11 of 2006 about Aceh Government, success of the local head election in 2006, the rise of local political parties as part of road map to peace process, the victory of local party founded by former GAM in legislative elections has relatively opened a new space for circulation of social power, culture, and politics in Aceh. Key Word: politics, peace, conflict, challenges, expectation
